So what is a
CHIRA®? How does it work?
Here is a
simplified explanation and example:
A CHIRA®
is a planning opportunity that allows an individual to
reinvest IRA funds into a charity while insuring the funds
are returned to their family upon their death. This shift in
wealth, from Wall Street to Main Street, can generate an
immediate benefit to charity without risk or income tax to
the individual donor.
The CHIRA® involves a loan from an
individual’s IRA to their charity. The loan to the charity
is collateralized by a life insurance policy purchased by
the charity on the donor’s life.
For
example:
A donor’s IRA loans $100,000 to your charity. Then,
$50,000 is used to purchase a single premium insurance
policy on the donor’s life. The $100,000 death benefit from
the policy is then used to repay the IRA for the loan upon
the donor’s demise. The charity (in this case the UYM acting
as your fiduciary administrator) annually pays interest and
also reserves (in trust) $30,000 to service future interest
(and any additional premiums if necessary). After payment of
the policy premiums and the interest reserve, there is an
immediate and unrestricted cash infusion of $20,000 which
can then be used by the charities for their tax exempt
purposes.
How long does it take your organization to

transfer and transaction is often equivalent to several
fundraisers – for some smaller groups, their entire year’s
